God Alone

At the entrance to the monk’s prayer garden at the Abbey of Gethsemani are the words God Alone.

This simple phrase has two meanings.  God Alone has the power to save us, heal our spirits and empower us for daily living.

These words are also a call to spend time with God, Alone.  How can we hear God’s still, small voice if we stay immersed in the noise of the world?

In the mornings, we turn on the radio, TV, or iPod, rush into traffic to our jobs, go to our meetings, place our phone calls, then drive home with the radio blaring, with our favorite TV shows waiting when we come home.

With all that noise and our business, how do we hear God speak to us?

We read in Mark 6:30-34, “Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. And He said to them, ‘Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.’ For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.”

I’ve had days like that.  I bet you have too; when we’ve been so busy that lunch time has passed us by, the time flies and there’s so much to do.  We are busy.  There are people waiting for us; needing our time and attention.  It is the work God has called us to do in the world and it is important.

But, without time with God, Alone, you will get lost and your work will lose meaning.  It will become just that; work!  This is especially true for those in church ministry.

Don’t get so caught up in the work of God that you forget the God for whom you work.  (tweet that, if you dare)

Don’t be afraid to be alone with God.

We need time with God, away from the noise to worship Him, still our souls and hear His voice.  (tweet that)

We need time to worship Him and rest our minds, hear His voice.

We need time with God Alone.

  1. Love this. Certainly easy with all the technology today to get caught up in other things and find our day gone and we still haven’t spent time in His presence. Thanks for the reminder.

  2. Reading your post these words came to my mind that we sing in church these are the words to it In Christ alone my hope is found,
    He is my light, my strength, my song;
    this Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
when fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,
here in the love of Christ I stand.

    Powerful words..amen
